Does God Change When the Language Does? Claim Audit

Claim Audit & Argument Records for the Genesis translation and salience essay.

Present status means present status. New evidence may strengthen, weaken, revise, or overturn any judgment below.

Claim Audit

This table shows what the essay presently claims, how strongly each claim is held, and where a reader can inspect the supporting records.

ClaimPresent StatusWhy This Status?Evidence & Dialogue
Several major patterns of God's narrated behavior remained recognizable across the witnesses examined.High-confidence / translation-resilient within tested corpusLexical/textual differences appeared, while creating, speaking, seeing/appraising, differentiating, naming, and continued activity remained comparatively stable.
Significant character evidence is available without prior Hebrew/Greek specialization.Strong methodological inferenceMajor behavioral observations were available in translations and survived later testing. Availability does not guarantee reader recognition.
The study tested textual availability, not whether readers across languages perceive the same portrait.High-confidence methodological boundaryNo independent cross-cultural reader study was conducted.
God's expressed volition concerning light corresponds with resulting reality.High-confidence / translation-resilientSpeech to reality remained stable; Korean made volition salient and Hebrew examination supported the broader characterization.
God positively appraises light; the exact force of tov is more translation-sensitive.High-confidence behavioral finding; lexical meaning sensitivePositive appraisal survives more strongly than any one exhaustive gloss of tov.
Differentiation, naming, and progressive activity remain comparatively stable.High-confidence / strong structural inferenceThese actions survive the witnesses examined; why God chooses progression remains open.
Some local expressions require greater translation restraint than the wider behavioral portrait.High-confidence translation-sensitive findingTohu wabohu, ruach Elohim, narrative economy, and related features require narrower confidence.
Missing Day-Two appraisal cannot bear substantial unqualified theology.High-confidence negative finding / textual-tradition-sensitiveMT lacks the appraisal while LXX can contain it.
Another language can illuminate a possible feature without becoming authoritative for its meaning.Strong methodological findingKorean made divine volition salient; the insight was retained only after return to Hebrew evidence.
Reader difference can generate candidate insights, but evidence must adjudicate them; collaborative reading remains an invitation to test.Strong inference / methodological application; collaborative benefit provisionalReader location can affect salience, but no reader experiment established improved accuracy or perception.

Claims Outside Present Authorization

These claims show where the investigation stopped, narrowed, or refused to convert a possibility into a conclusion.

ClaimPresent StatusReason
God's character is language-independent.Not presently authorizedThe audit supports translation-resilience within the tested corpus, not language independence in every possible linguistic or interpretive setting.
Comparable textual availability proves comparable reader perception. Not presently authorizedThe investigation did not conduct independent cross-cultural reader testing.
A translation that makes a feature salient becomes authoritative for meaning. Not presently authorizedIllumination generates candidate questions; source evidence and broader textual reasoning adjudicate them.
Linguistic plurality has a deliberate theological relationship to multiple perceptual angles on revelation.Open questionThe question is consequential and preserved, but the present audit does not authorize resolution.

Argument Records

These records preserve the audit trail: evidence, boundaries, revisions, competing interpretations, and source links behind the table.

AR-01

The Person Remains Recognizable Across the Tested Witnesses

Claim: Across Genesis 1:1-5 witnesses examined, several major patterns of God's narrated behavior remained comparatively stable.

Present status: High-confidence finding / translation-resilient within tested corpus

Primary evidence

The witnesses examined varied lexically and descriptively while preserving central narrated behaviors: God creates, remains involved, speaks, expresses volition, sees, positively appraises light, differentiates, names, and continues acting.

Complications

Tohu wabohu, ruach Elohim, tov, temporal formulas, narrative economy, fulfillment placement, and second-day appraisal complicate narrower claims.

The evidence does not authorize saying God's character is language-independent, that translations contain identical content, or that readers perceive the same portrait identically.

The vocabulary moved more than the Person did.

AR-02

Significant Character Evidence Is Available to Non-Specialist Readers

Claim: Translated texts preserve major narrated actions that can support meaningful character inquiry.

Present status: Strong methodological inference / translation-resilient evidence base

Why we presently hold it

Major narrated actions were visible in translation and survived later testing against source-language and textual questions.

Availability is not the same as actual recognition; the audit does not claim that every reader notices or interprets the evidence similarly.

You do not need to become a scholar before you are allowed to start looking.

AR-03

Textual Availability Is Not Reader Perception

Claim: The study tested textual availability, not whether readers across languages perceive the same portrait.

Present status: High-confidence methodological boundary / negative finding

Boundary

The experiment compared texts and translations. It did not study independent native-language readers.

Comparable textual evidence may be available while comparable reader perception remains undemonstrated.

Open question relationship

OQ-01 preserves the unresolved reader-perception question.

AR-04

Expressed Divine Volition Corresponds With Resulting Reality

Claim: Genesis 1:3 gives the reader access to divine volition concerning light before corresponding reality.

Present status: High-confidence finding / translation-resilient

Primary evidence

Genesis 1:3 presents divine speech concerning light followed by the reality of light.

Korean translation discussion made volition newly salient; Hebrew examination supported retaining volition/intention language without making command language wrong.

Purpose boundary

The reader can compare what God expressed with what occurred. The investigation does not establish that God disclosed intention specifically to build trust.

AR-05

Positive Appraisal Is Stable; Exact Lexical Content Is Not

Claim: God sees light and communicates positive appraisal, while the exact force of tov remains more translation-sensitive.

Present status: High-confidence behavioral finding / translation-resilient; lexical resolution translation-sensitive

Primary evidence

Genesis 1:4 narrates God seeing the light and positively appraising it.

The audit does not reduce tov exhaustively to moral goodness, functionality, beauty, usefulness, perfection, or any single English gloss.

Local-confidence rule

Uncertainty about lexical breadth does not erase the narrated act of appraisal.

AR-06

Differentiation, Naming, and Progressive Activity Remain Stable

Claim: God differentiates light/darkness, names Day/Night, and continues creative activity after demonstrating effective agency.

Present status: High-confidence behavioral findings / strong structural inference / translation-resilient

Why we presently hold it

Differentiation, naming, and continued creative activity survive the witnesses examined.

Demonstrated efficacy coexists with progressive activity, but why God chooses progression remains open.

AR-07

Local Translation Differences Require Local Restraint

Claim: Some local expressions require greater translation restraint than the wider behavioral portrait.

Present status: High-confidence translation-sensitive finding

Translation-sensitive examples

Tohu wabohu: unfinished is a strong synthesis, not an exhaustive lexical equivalent.

Ruach Elohim: Spirit/wind possibilities require restraint; no developed creative mechanism is established.

Narrative economy: economical narration does not by itself establish divine humility, modesty, or absence of boasting.

Local uncertainty stays local.

AR-08

The Day-Two Appraisal Is a Genuine Textual Complication

Claim: The MT absence of positive appraisal cannot bear substantial unqualified character theology because the LXX tradition can contain the appraisal.

Present status: High-confidence negative finding / textual-tradition-sensitive

Primary evidence

The MT absence of positive appraisal on Day Two remains observable, while the LXX tradition can contain the appraisal.

The silence therefore cannot be universalized into substantial unqualified character theology.

AR-09

Another Language Can Illuminate Without Becoming Authoritative

Claim: Another language can illuminate a possible feature without becoming authoritative for its meaning.

Present status: Strong methodological finding

Methodological sequence

The Korean Genesis 1:3 case demonstrated the process: salience, candidate question, return to source evidence, adjudication, and then retain, revise, or reject.

Translation may preserve, obscure, interpret, or illuminate. Illumination does not mean the target translation outranks the source.

Never protect a discovery from another language.

AR-10

Reader Location Can Affect Salience Without Authorizing Meaning

Claim: Reader location can affect salience, but evidence must adjudicate meaning.

Present status: Strong inference / externally supported reader-perception principle

Why we presently hold it

Language, culture, prior theology, education, profession, personality, and life experience can affect salience.

The Genesis experiment did not experimentally vary actual readers across all these dimensions.

Salience generates questions and candidate discoveries. Evidence adjudicates them.

AR-11

"Show Me Where You Saw That" Is a Disciplined Invitation

Claim: Asking another reader to locate an observation in shared textual evidence welcomes difference without treating every interpretation as equally authorized.

Present status: Methodological application / praxis recommendation

Praxis boundary

Collaborative reading is a disciplined invitation to test perception against shared evidence.

The investigation did not demonstrate greater accuracy, consensus, humility, or completeness from collaborative reading.

Show me where you saw that.

Open Questions

These records preserve consequential questions the present evidence does not yet authorize the audit to resolve.

OQ-01

Would independent readers using different languages spontaneously perceive substantially similar character patterns?

Open question / preserved unresolved question

OQ-02

Which dimensions of culture and experience materially affect character salience?

Open question / preserved unresolved question

OQ-03

Can disciplined cross-cultural group reading enlarge perception without increasing interpretive distortion?

Open question / preserved unresolved question

OQ-04

Does linguistic plurality have any deliberate theological relationship to multiple perceptual angles on revelation?

Open question / preserved unresolved question

Revision Record

These entries show where earlier formulations were narrowed, corrected, or made more proportionate to the evidence.

RR-01Character patterns may effectively be language-agnostic.Significant lexical/textual variation and reader-perception distinction.Major behavioral patterns proved translation-resilient **within the tested corpus**.
RR-02"Unfinished condition" treated nearly as direct description.*Tohu wabohu* / LXX variation."Unfinished" is a strong narrative synthesis, not an exhaustive lexical equivalent.
RR-03Narrative economy might disclose that God does not advertise/boast.Effect/purpose, narrator/divine-psychology distinction, translation variation.Extraordinary acts are narrated economically; stronger psychological claims remain weaker.
RR-04Missing Day-Two *tov* might carry substantial character significance.LXX contains positive appraisal.MT absence is real but too variable to bear major unqualified theology.
RR-05Other languages mainly test English-originating discoveries.English-privileging problem; Korean emergence.Other languages can also generate candidates that must return to source evidence.
RR-06Reader difference is primarily bias to control.Linguistic emergence and salience dialogue.Reader location can create bias and make genuine features newly salient; evidence adjudicates.
RR-07Cross-cultural readers may help one another see more as an outcome. No actual reader experiment.Collaborative cross-cultural reading is a plausible experiment/invitation, not a demonstrated result.
